Serious games are usually simulations of real world events or processes. They are generally designed to be both entertaining and educational. Serious games use a game like interface to teach the players about things like history, current events, how to use diagnostic tools, how to prepare for emergencies, etc.
Serious games allow people to explore subjects that would normally be cost prohibitive, safely figure out how to deal with situations that would normally be dangerous, and experience the hardships of situations from history or the present that others may be living through. Serious games teach people by giving them the power to explore situations that they would not ordinarily have a chance to encounter.
